A Cry for Innovation Ignites Amidst Shocking Medication Adherence Statistics

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), medication adherence among patients suffering chronic diseases in developed countries is only about 50%. In the US alone, it is estimated that medication nonadherence costs the health system over $500 billion due to worsening of patient conditions, increases in comorbid diseases and health care costs, and death. These staggering statistics call for innovative ways to increase adherence so that patients are healthier and happier.

Digital Innovation Breathes Life into Patient Compliance

Some of the world’s leading health and life science companies are leveraging digital solutions to avoid the patient compliance pitfall. And there are many ways that technology can help. Let’s take a look at some examples of ways it can be used, and more specifically how top organizations are benefitting.

  1. Mobile Apps. I have been lucky to be a part of some amazing digital firsts at Mobiquity, like the first-ever U.S. FDA-Approved digital medicine system. The objective of this work was to help patients and caregivers track medication compliance. The goal was to improve outcomes by helping patients adhere to their drug regimen while also enabling a more informed discussion between patients and doctors, including frank discussions about reasons for not taking medication and potential solutions. Mobiquity designed and developed a patient app as well healthcare provider and caregiver portals for patient support. Incorporating mobile apps into your digital strategy is a great way to link the patient or caregiver with their clinical team.

  2. Voice Capabilities. Conversational AI tools like Alexa and Google Assistant are becoming a staple in homes around the world. Top healthcare and pharmaceutical companies are beginning to leverage these tools to provide drug therapy information, behavioral coaching, lifestyle support and medication reminders. Voice technology provides patients with the tools and information they need to more effectively manage their conditions.

  3. Websites and Patient Portals. Patient portals are becoming increasingly popular, adopted by both healthcare providers and patients to track and manage care. Think about how you can create a portal to support your patients with medication adherence, healthcare regimens, care plans, and more. More active patient engagement is essential to improving adherence and portals provide a very effective way to accomplish that.

  4. Clinical Trial Technologies. Run your trial with peace of mind. Digital tools provide the foundation for offering “virtual” trials that can improve patient retention and compliance and help keep subjects engaged. In addition, it can help your clinical trial staff by mitigating risks, boosting efficiency, and reducing overall burden, helping to ensure study goals are met.

Supporting Patients with Compliance Tools Should Be Easy

The truth is patients are busy, just like everyone else. Even those with chronic diseases and disorders make mistakes. They may accidentally skip a dose, take their medication on the wrong day, or forget to take treatment with meals. But there are ways to simplify the process and make it easy for them.

With an innovative strategy, a well-thought out plan, and strong execution, you can create tools and technologies that support your patients, creating healthy, happy people while improving their health outcomes and lowering the cost of care.
