Amazon Scores Touchdown With Alexa Ad During Big Game

Whether you were cheering for the Eagles to finally bring home the trophy like our colleagues in Wayne or hoping our Waltham office's beloved Patriots would secure a repeat championship, we can all agree on one thing about last night's Big Game. Amazon scored a winning touchdown with its Alexa commercial.

In case you need a refresher (it was a late night after all), the ad starts with a woman asking Alexa about the weather. Alexa begins to respond in her typical friendly voice but quickly starts coughing as she loses her voice. Since she can no longer do her job, Amazon calls in replacements - celebrities Gordon Ramsay, Rebel Wilson, Cardi B, and Sir Anthony Hopkins - each of whom fails in the funniest of ways.

Fortunately, there's no need to send Alexa get well wishes, as she gets her voice back before the commercial ends. We can all rest assured that our favorite virtual assistant is back in action to handle our every request - with solid job security I should note.

The ad, which is rumored to have cost $15 million, proved to be a worthwhile investment. The commercial stood out among the rest and made us laugh. At the same time, it also raised some interesting questions about the role that Alexa is increasingly playing in our lives. I wonder how many of us would really be laughing if she suddenly shut down?
