A significant driver of the pandemic app surge is Apple’s App Store, which houses almost two million apps. Browse through the App Store and you’ll find apps with thousands and even millions of ratings. For example, The Home Depot has over 700,000 ratings on its app, which carries a 4.7 star overall score. Domino’s Pizza has 4.9 million ratings of its app, with a rating of 4.8 stars.
 
A near 5-star App Store score based on thousands or millions of user ratings is impressive. But what many don’t know is that these scores are the result of a system that enables false app ratings and inflated scores — which should concern marketers everywhere.
